Siloxane
Masterbatches
Siloxane additives are highly
effective internal and external lubricants. These plastic additives offer a
number of significant processing advantages and surface improvements such as
scratch and abrasion resistance while reducing friction.
Unlike conventional silicone-based materials, they are ultra high molecular
weight polymers (>15 million cSt)
dispersed with an average particle size of 5 microns in various
thermoplastics. They overcome the
handling problems and surface adhesion difficulties that have prevented the
widespread use of lower molecular weight forms of plastic additives in the
industry.
The ultra high molecular weight nature of the siloxane polymer component of
the Siloxane Masterbatches eliminates blooming as well as migration, which
could be experienced when using lower molecular weight fluids or organic
additives.
These unique masterbatches are typically used:
- to modify the surface of finished plastic
parts for friction management
- to improve mar resistance and wear resistance
- as process aids to increase melt flow for
cycle time reduction
Low concentrations (0.1-1.0%) of these siloxane masterbatches offer:
- increased compounding efficiency
- improved polymer flow and mold filling
- cycle time reduction
- lower extruder torque
Concentrations of 1-5% siloxane can facilitate easier mold release and
provide significantly improved surface properties, including:
- better lubricity
- improved gloss and slip
- improved mar resistance and scratch resistance
The masterbatch can significantly reduce the coefficient of friction of a
polymer without affecting post-finishing operations such as printing,
plating, and painting.
Multibase
offers siloxane masterbatches in a solid form (pelletized) for easy
handling as an additive in compounding or downstream in the process.
